Introduction

Notion is the all-in-one app that everybody is talking about. One of its most used features is for writing and notetaking. (I’m writing this article inside Notion right now.) Word count can be useful if you are writing an article, a blog post, or an essay that has a minimum or maximum word count, or even for Twitter writers who want to stay under the 280-character limit. But does Notion have a word count feature?

Notion has a word count feature.

Yes, Notion has a word count feature that allows you to see how many words in total are inside a page.

How to check the word count in Notion

To check the word count on any Notion page, open the page and click on the three dots, the settings symbol in the upper right corner of your Notion page. Click to open the “Style, Export and More” drop-down menu. You can see the total word count at the bottom of the drop-down menu, right above the last edited time and date.

Notion word count on highlighted or selected text

You may be wondering if Notion's word count works like it does in word processors such as Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, or Mac Pages. The answer is no. Currently, you cannot count highlighted or selected text on a Notion page (although this may be a feature in the future!).

Can I add the word count to database property?

As for highlighted or selected text, the drawback of the word counter is that you cannot see this information as a page or database property. But you can count the word inside a text property in a database. Keep reading to learn how.

Can I Count Word with a formula?

You can use a formula to count the number of words in a text property of a Notion database page. Use the following formula:

if(length(prop("Name")) > 0, length(replaceAll(prop("Name"), "[^ ]", "")) + 1, 0)

You can also use a character counter with this formula.

length(prop("Name"))

What are some word count formulas use?

Word count in database can be useful if you use Notion to write tweets or threads, allowing you to stay within the 280-character limit. However, outside of Twitter, these formulas may not be very useful in your day-to-day work. This in an example database that allow you to create a twitter thread. I used the formula show above.

Conclusion

While Notion has a lot of features, including a page or database word count, it still has some limitations. Having the ability to include word count as a property in a database, like Created Time, can be useful for bloggers and writers. They would be able to just copy and paste, or even use it to estimate the reading time of an article. We hope that Notion will implement this soon.
